Read before you open

Before trying a cosmetic, check its intended area of use, directions, ingredient list and warnings. A face serum is not automatically an eye-area product. A recommended frequency is not an invitation to use more for faster results. If something is unclear, ask about the exact product rather than relying on general advice for its main ingredient.

Keep the packaging until you have noted the product name and batch information. During a consultation, these details are more helpful than a photograph of a similar-looking bottle. Tell the adviser which products you already use and whether any previous formula has caused a reaction. You can ask a question without sending unnecessary medical details.

Try a small area first

The AAD recommends testing a new skincare product on a small area, such as the underside of the arm, before wider use. Its general method is to apply a normal amount twice daily for seven to ten days. Rinse-off products should only stay on for their usual instructed time. Follow any more restrictive product-specific instructions and seek advice when the two do not match.

This home check can help reveal a reaction, but it cannot guarantee that a product will suit your face or diagnose an allergy. Clinical patch testing is a different procedure performed to investigate possible causes of a reaction. If redness, itching or swelling develops, wash the product off and stop using it; severe or persistent symptoms need professional advice.

Change one thing you can observe

After a satisfactory small-area check, introducing one product at a time makes it easier to connect a change with how your skin feels. Keep the rest of your routine familiar and record the start date. Follow the formula's own frequency and amount rather than copying someone else's routine.

Judge progress against one realistic aim, such as how comfortable your skin feels after cleansing. Avoid comparing daily photographs taken in different lighting. Visible changes may take time, and irritation is not proof that a product is working. A recommendation should remain adjustable if a product does not suit you.
