Let the label set the rules

The life of a cosmetic depends on its formula, packaging, storage and use. Two serums with the same headline ingredient may have different instructions. Check the expiry or minimum-durability information, any period-after-opening symbol, and the manufacturer's storage directions. Do not borrow a storage temperature or opened lifespan from another brand.

An open-jar symbol with a number followed by M describes a period in months after opening where that symbol applies. Recording the opening date on a small label or in your own notes makes it useful. Keep the outer packaging if it carries directions or batch information that is absent from the container.

Protect it from everyday contamination

Close the cap securely after use and keep the container and applicator clean. Avoid touching a dropper tip to your face or hands. Do not add water to extend a product or transfer it to an unlabelled container; doing so makes its original directions and traceability harder to follow.

The FDA notes that heat, light, air, moisture and contamination can affect cosmetics over time. Use a clean, dry storage place consistent with the label, away from direct sunlight and hot cars. Refrigeration is not a universal upgrade. Only chill or freeze a formula when its manufacturer specifically instructs you to do so.

Treat every vial as its own product

A small glass vial or metal closure describes packaging, not how the contents should be used. For a topical cosmetic, follow the supplied opening and dispensing instructions. Do not assume it is a single-use product, sterile, or suitable for any use beyond the stated cosmetic application. Never use a syringe or improvise an opening method from the appearance alone.

If a product unexpectedly changes smell, colour or texture, stops dispensing normally, leaks, or has a damaged seal, set it aside and contact the seller. Appearance cannot prove that a formula is safe, so continue to respect its dates and directions even when it looks unchanged. For a product query, its name, batch number and opening date are useful details to have ready.
