Make protection a separate step
A brightening serum and a sunscreen have different jobs. An ingredient marketed for radiance or antioxidant care does not provide an SPF unless the finished product has been tested and labelled for that purpose. Keep sun protection in the routine even when you use vitamin C or another cosmetic serum.
The AAD recommends a broad-spectrum sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher and water resistance. Broad-spectrum protection covers UVA and UVB. Check the label on the product sold in your country, including its directions and any water-resistance limits. Choose a texture you can apply generously and comfortably, rather than using too little of a formula you dislike.
Plan for the whole day
Apply sunscreen before going outside; the AAD advises allowing approximately fifteen minutes. Cover exposed skin, remembering areas such as the ears and neck. Use the amount recommended by the manufacturer. A thin decorative layer of makeup with SPF may not provide the protection you expect from its label.
When outdoors, the AAD advises reapplying every two hours and after swimming or sweating. Water resistance does not mean that an application lasts indefinitely. Keep a suitable product accessible when you plan your day, and read its reapplication instructions before an activity rather than after you have already been outside.
Use more than one form of protection
Shade, protective clothing, a broad-brimmed hat and sunglasses can work alongside sunscreen. UV exposure is relevant on cloudy days as well as bright ones. A routine that includes these practical choices is more useful than treating sunscreen as something only for a beach holiday.
Check the expiry date and avoid leaving sunscreen in a hot car or direct sunlight. Changes in smell, colour or texture are reasons to stop and check with the manufacturer, even if a printed date has not passed. During a skincare consultation, mention your usual outdoor activities and the textures you prefer. That can help make a daily routine easier to follow; it does not turn an ordinary cosmetic serum into sun protection.
